Was it a date or are we just friends?

I went to the movies with my friend's stepbrother, and I'm not sure if it was a date. We text all the time, and I mentioned this scary movie that looked good, and he said we should go see it, so we went. My friend said he told them it wasn't a date though. We didn't hold hands or anything, but he paid for our tickets and also for ice cream when we went out afterward. Now we're going out again this weekend. Sometimes when we text it seems like he's hinting at stuff, like he'll be like "I miss having a girl" but I don't know how to respond, because I don't know if he's referring to me or not. Does he like me, and was this a date? Or are we just friends?
